The Metaverse Platform Database

David has been maintaining a database of metaversal worlds for several years now for his private use. We're now making that database public. Note that the views expressed in the Database are David's own, and the information is as best as he can make it based on open sources and, where possible, actually trying the worlds. Generally platforms which are aimed at developing bespoke experience for corporate clients (e.g. for training etc) are excluded.

You can find the database at:

https://airtable.com/appXrf96UHgeeLVVY/shrO43LmjVoCLAXi2/tblbqIOyMgAwpS9ay/viwkUYzv4pMyaghdN

There are 3 tabs:

  • Live XR Platforms
  • Defunct VR Platforms
  • Fringe Interest - e.g game and training platforms with no/minimal use build agency or novel features

Use the Gallery view to get nice simple panels, as below, or the grid/table view for the detail.

The fields used in the main Live XR Platforms table are:

  • Platform Name
  • Logo
  • Sample Image - mainly to give a sense of graphic style and avatars
  • Format - principally whether a download or browser based
  • Access - whether by HMD-VR, HMD-MR, DesktopVR, MobileVR, Cardboard/Slot-in VR etc
  • Status - how long the platform has been around and its state of development
  • Collaboration Features - usually a partial list as few platforms list them so we have to check them out ourselves
  • Avatar - what the avatars are like, in particular are the full body or just head/arms/torso, and what sort of style
  • Authoring - how building and scripting are done - in particular are they done "live" in world, or in a separate editing platform
  • Space Model - does it have an Snowcrash-style world map that people buy land on, or does each user get their own space/room which has no spatial relationship to anyone else's
  • Other key features - in particular does it use crypto or blockchain, or is it voxel based
  • Target audience - principally consumer or corporate, and then some sub-categories
  • IP - is it built on open source code, or proprietary
  • Pricing - most worlds have a free tier to let you try it out
  • Radar - not populated yet, but will have the 10 Axioms radar from the Critical Introduction book
  • Website - URL for the platform
  • Additional Notes - other points of note
  • Interesting, 0 to 5 stars as to how much it contributes to the demonstration and future of the Metaverse, a very personal view!

Any suggestions for amendments or inclusions welcome to mvdatabase@daden.co.uk or in the comments below.

There is also quite a nice Virtual Worlds Museum at https://www.virtualworlds.museum/ with more photos, links and descriptions to many of these virtual worlds and to other more game orientated platforms.
