Abstract
This chapter provides a high-level description of the technologies which underpin the metaverse. Most of the technologies that underlie the metaverse are also found in Virtual Worlds, Massively-Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs), video games in general, and in 3D collaboration and training software. At a technical level a metaverse is just a distinct way of combining these elements. The chapter looks at technologies in 8 broad areas: 3D Environments, Navigation and Land Model, Multi-User Enablers, Avatars, Interactivity, Ecosystem Tools, Standards and Portability and User Interfaces. It also considers the impact of AI and the Blockchain on the metaverse.
